Finalists announced for the Nikon-Walkley Awards 2010

18 October, 2010 | My Nikon Life | Comments

The finalists in the Nikon-Walkley Photographic Awards have been announced.

The awards are the foremost competition for press photographers in Australia and are judged by a panel of senior photographers and picture editors who are representative of the whole industry.

The depth of quality of all the entries was quite remarkable this year, the judges said. The federal election campaign may have lacked spontaneity, they added, but Australian photographers submitted stunning images from the campaign. These are juxtaposed with tremendous photos of Australian weather extremes, and sporting photos that are both action-packed and personal."

Cameron Laird won the 2010 Nikon-Walkley Best Portrait Prize for a photograph of north Queensland Independent MP Bob Katter.

Cameron Laird – Winner of Best Portrait Prize

Laird photographed Katter on the phone at home, surrounded by portraits, silverware and Ned Kelly memorabilia. Roundly rejecting the boundaries of his armchair, the MP is caught in a moment of disagreement with a caller. The image originally appeared in The Courier-Mail. The photographer captured not only a portrait of a man, but a man in his surroundings, said the judges.

The Bendigo Advertisers Brendan McCarthy has taken out the 2010 Nikon-Walkley Community/Regional Prize. The judges described his series of photos, shot in and around Bendigo, as a mature entry with a strong mix of images. Subjects included a Buddhist monk sharing a joke with his novices, bats in flight, and a moment of quiet bonding between Amanda Perry and her 13-year-old dog, Zed.
