Free fashion photography workshops during Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

Nikon School presents a series of free fashion photography workshops at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week from Tuesday 31st August to Saturday 4th September at the marquee in City Square.

Australian fashion photography heavyweights, Christian Blanchard, Monty Coles and Stefan Gosatti, will offer participants a rare insight into the diverse and exciting world of fashion photography. Each photographer has been specially selected by Nikon to cover a broad range of fashion photography genres including runway, editorial and commercial, as well as show case some to the official MSFW behind the scenes moments.

Participants will also be able to see the experts in action with live photo shoots that will demonstrate the technical skills and creative considerations that have shot them to fame.

All eager photographers with an eye for style are encouraged to attend these unique Nikon School workshops.

‘Fashion Photography On and Off the Runway’ Part 1

Tuesday 31st August – 4:30pm – 6:00pm

Get an insight into the glitz, glamour and chaos of working behind the scenes at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week before seeing Monty Coles in action as he turns the catwalk into a photography studio. Participants will walk away with valuable knowledge on editorial fashion photography techniques after Coles 45 minute session.

  • Topic 1 ‘Behind the Scenes of MSFW Exposed’
    See what really happens behind the scenes of Australia’s most popular consumer fashion event.
    Exclusively for Nikon School, Monty Coles will show case a select range of his favourite MSFW behind the scenes moments he has captured for his blog, www.theloupe.org. Each image will be reviewed in detail with Coles explaining how he created the shots from his camera settings to the compositional elements to the equipment he used.
  • Topic 2 ‘Editorial Fashion Photography Tips Live Photo Shoot’
    Sharing some of his key learnings from over ten years shooting for Vogue, Coles will conduct a live photo shoot to demonstrate some techniques and equipment he uses to create the perfect shot for the editorial context

See the world of runway through the lens of Stefan Gosatti. In this 45 minute session participants will learn what it is really like being a professional photographer at major fashion events.

  • Topic 1 - My Favourite Runway Images Explained
    Stefan Gosatti presents a show case of his favourite runway and behind the scenes images from recent leading fashion events in Sydney, Melbourne and New York. Gosatti will explain how he captured the emotion and fashion in each image.
  • Topic 2 - Shooting Runway From The Pit
    Hear what it is like to actually shoot runway. Gosatti shares some of his experiences of shooting from the pit including his equipment setup for the best results and how to choose and get the best vantage point so you don’t miss the moment. Be ready and be on the ball.

 

Christian Blanchard

One of Australia’s Top Ten as named by Capture Magazine

Christian Blanchard is currently working as a freelance photographer and film director. Recently named by Capture Magazine as one of Australia’s top ten, Blanchard’s rising star has seen him shoot global campaigns for clients including Mimco, Amstel, Nobody Denim, Nintendo, L’Oreal Paris and Puma.

With a penchant for celebrity portraiture, he effortlessly commands the space around him, never yielding to ego and always striving to impress.

Come experience first-hand the exciting world of fashion photography with the critically acclaimed Christian Blanchard. The 90-minute workshops will guide you through lighting techniques, camera operations and personal skills required to create successful fashion imagery.

  • Topic 1 ‘Classic Lighting Made Simple’ Live Photo Shoot
    This topic is an introduction to lighting that will educate on the most effective lighting techniques used in the fashion industry. Participants will learn the fundamentals of classic lighting techniques and how to simplify technical considerations.
  • Topic 2 ‘Capturing Movement in Fashion’ Live Photo Shoot
    Fashion photography is a creative realm that is used to showcase the creations of fashion designers along with the fictional visions of the photographer. This topic provides insight into the technical skills and creative considerations required to capture moving elements within a fashion photograph.
  • Topic 3 ‘Motion Picture with Digital SLR’s’ Review of a Short Film Captured on a Nikon D3s
    We are entering a new era that is allowing photographers to venture into motion picture.

  • This world-first screening of a short film shot on the Nikon D3s will be followed by a hands on run through on the functionality of the camera and how certain scenes from the film were captured in the testing climate of the Australian snowfields.
