Features

Horizontal-opening type vari-angle LCD monitor
To fully utilise Live View and D-Movie, the D5100 features an approx. 921k-dot, 7.5 cm (3-in.), horizontal-opening type vari-angle LCD monitor which facilitates the operability when using a tripod. Angle range Close/open: 0˚ to 180˚ Rotate: -90˚ to +180˚ (270˚)

DX-format CMOS sensor
The D5100 employs Nikon’s renowned DX-format CMOS image sensor that provides 16.2 effective megapixels. It delivers extraordinary image quality throughout a wide ISO sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 6400 with low noise. In addition, Hi 1 (ISO 12800 equivalent) and Hi 2 (ISO 25600 equivalent) equivalent are also available. Initial image capture data can be quickly and accurately transferred using 14-bit integrated A/D conversion. Live View readout supported. The resulting output reveals breathtaking details and remarkably smooth tonal gradations.

EXPEED image processing
Nikon’s comprehensive EXPEED image processing utilises an accumulation of sophisticated Nikon intelligence and technologies to ensure impeccable quality for both still images and movies, while also achieving high-speed processing and low power consumption. It also effectively reduces lateral chromatic aberration.

Full 1080p HD supported and enhanced ease of use
The D5100 is equipped with the D-Movie function that enables recording of full high-definition movies (1920 × 1080p, 30p) exhibiting superior video quality. In addition, the D5100 features full auto focus during movie recording and in camera movie editing features that allow users to save a single frame as a still JPEG image or delete unnecessary portions from the beginning and/or end of movie files. The D5100 is also compatible with external stereo microphones(stereo microphone ME-1available separately).

7 Special Effects modes
Special Effect modes can be applied to both still pictures and movies. Set the mode dial to EFFECTS and select an option prior to shooting, while confirming the effect on the monitor image in real time. The selective Colour mode creates a monochrome image except for the selected colours (up to 3 colours can be selected). Selecting the Colour sketch option prior to shooting creates sketch-style images. The miniature effect makes an image appear as if it is a view of miniature scale models. The night vision mode enables shooting at sensitivity up to ISO 102400 and provides the enjoyment of night shooting using ultra-high sensitivity range.

Easy-to-access Live View mode
The Live View function, activated by pressing the dedicated Live View button, makes it easy to shoot while composing on the LCD monitor. In Handheld mode, which allows you to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting, TTL phase-detection AF using 51 AF points is activated. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects. It allows contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame.

Active D-Lighting for smooth tone reproduction in high-contrast lighting
By localising tone control, Active D-Lighting accurately restores the details in shadows and highlighted areas which are often lost in high-contrast lighting situations. Simply choose the appropriate setting – auto, extra high, high, normal, low or off – prior to shooting. For further options that will help you achieve your desired tone, the D5100 also allows you to bracket your pictures with varying strength levels, for up to two frames, perfect for difficult lighting situations or if you don’t have the time or experience to select just one Active D-Lighting setting. When Auto is selected, the camera will automatically set the appropriate strength level according to shooting conditions. Supports firmware update of the SB-900/700.

High Dynamic Range
HDR mode combines two images at varying exposure to produce a single image with a wider dynamic range.

Auto White Balance
Auto White Balance increases the precision of detection of white from light source based on detailed segmentation scene recognition patterns. It prevents red cast and yellow, blue and green cast is reduced.

Picture Control: Customise the visual style of your images
Nikon’s Picture Control enables you to create the pictures you envision, quickly and easily, by making specific selections and adjustments to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. And with other Picture Control-compatible cameras, as long as the settings are the same, you’re able to obtain the same picture tone. The D5100 offers six preset Picture Control options – Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape and Monochrome. Picture Controls can be changed after taking pictures, and custom Picture Controls can be created and shared.

AF system with high-density 11-point AF
The 11 AF points are employed in various focus area modes, according to subject conditions. Single-point AF mode allows you to choose a single AF point from among the 11 and the camera focuses on subject at a selected focus point only. With Dynamic-area AF the camera will focus based on information from surrounding points if the subject briefly leaves the selected focus point. Auto-area AF automatically detects the subject and selects the focus point. The 11-point option offers 3D-tracking mode, which automatically shifts the focus point to match the subject’s movements.

Scene Recognition System
Information from the 420-pixel RGB sensor is used to recognise the subject or scene prior to capture. The results are then reflected in auto exposure, autofocus and auto white balance for more accurate control. Furthermore, Face Detection System utilising the image sensor detects human faces and applies the information to face-priority AF in Live View mode, AE, AWB and playback zoom.
